Hello nature lover.....!

The three general areas at right showing where Warm (yellow) and Cool  season (blue) grasses are used within the USA.

In the transition zone (purple), a mixture of these two grass types is sometimes required.  However the Transition zone generally favors the cool-season grasses over the warm season ones.

Lawngrasses.com is your guide to helping discover the right grass for your site, location, needs and maintenance (care) requirements.  Here we will guide you through finding a suitable grass for your location and other aspects that affect your grass selection.  It is not a simple task, not one that is always perfect, considering the many different "tasks" that we ask our grass lawns to perform.

By learning some basic knowledge, along with investigating what is successful in your area, you can select the correct grass variety and successfully plant it by either seeding, sodding, sprigging or plugging your new lawn.

Step 1 - Where will your grass live?

Determining the area  that your grass will live is your first decision (Step 1).  You do this by examining the transition map in use with the other maps.  This allows you to find your state and location so that you can better determine what grasses will survive and grow best in your lawn location.

This critical information applies to both lawn and pasture uses for grasses.  It does you no good to buy and plant a warm season grass only to find that the hard freeze that is normal for your winter will kill the grass.  Same goes for cool season grasses when the summer temps shrivel your grass to nothing.  Finding the right grass or MIX of grasses is an important step in planting and obtaining a great lawn.

Step 2 - Decide on your needs in a Lawn Grass
Lawns and Pets How much effort, time, and money do you want to spend on your lawn?... Not just in the beginning, but for the rest of your lawns life (maybe longer than yours?).   Answering this question helps to determine which grass you should plant. Secondly is what uses you will have for your lawn and perhaps most important... just where will your lawn live?

Select your particular Grass Need - (Step 2).

Step 3 - Determining the type of Grass to plant

You should also consider the differences between grasses in the way they grow (bunch or creeping), look (appearance) and the length of their life span (perennial or annual).

Select the grasses on your list that best meets your requirements in the Step #3 Activity areas.
